Howard Robins

Howie is the President of the ARSBC and has been involved with the organisation from its inception in 1989.  “It’s been an exciting and interesting adventure and I’m proud of the accomplishments we have made to B.C.’s marine ecology and of the recognition the ARSBC has earned world-wide as leaders in the creation of artificial reefs for marine habitat.  We could not have done this without the vision and drive of our Directors as well as the support of countless volunteers”.

Howie has been an active diver since 1973 and lives in Vancouver, the home base of the ARSBC organisation.

Doug Pemberton

Doug has been diving for 35 years, and has dived and photographed many areas of the world including South Pacific, Caribbean, Mexico, Mediterranean, Red Sea and all three coasts of Canada. He has also been an Associate and Contributing Editor for DIVER Magazine for the past 12 years. Doug became actively involved with the ARSBC in 1991 as a volunteer on the Chaudiere project and has worked on most projects since that time. He joined the Board of Directors in 2002.

Les Lightstone

Les is a professional videographer, and is responsible for many of the Society's video clips which have been used locally, nationally, and around the world.  It was also Les' contacts in the television industry which helped engage the Discovery Channel to produce the "Sinking Wings" documentary episode of Mega-Builders, on the sinking of the Boeing 737.   Les joined the Board of Directors in 2001, just after the sinking of the Cape Breton.

Larry has been diving since 1999, and joined the Board of Directors in 2001 after having worked on the Cape Breton project.  Larry's day-job is as a Space Mission Analyst, helping to design satellite missions.  It was the similuation of zero-gravity weightlessness which first attracted him to scuba diving, but now he loves seeing the amazing diversity of marine life which the B.C. coast has to offer.
Deirdre Forbes McCracken

wpe1.jpg (3449 bytes) Deirdre has been working in the diving industry since 1989 and became a PADI Instructor in 1993. She was first involved with the ARSBC in 1992 as a volunteer for the HMCS Chaudiere Project. Since then, she has been actively diving wrecks around the world and taking photos of the marine life that inhabits them. Deirdre has owned her own Dive Centre here in Vancouver for the past 13 years, and is an active PADI Master Instructor. As an enthusiastic member of the dive industry, she enjoys working with the diving community as a whole, along with coordinating the dedicated volunteers of the latest ARSBC project the HMCS Annapolis. She joined the Board of Directors in 2008, and looks forward to the continued promotion of diving and dive tourism through ecologically based
Mark Gollner

MarkG.jpg (11041 bytes) Mark is a Registered Professional Biologist and has been diving since 1984.   He joined the ARSBC in 2004 to help develop a more scientifically-based system to monitor and document the marine life growth on the 7 ARSBC reefs.  Mark has a degree in Oceanography from UBC, and his experience as an Aquatic Biologist and Consultant over the past 15 years has been an asset to the ARSBC.  Mark has been working closely with the other ARSBC directors to obtain, organise and present much needed biological data on the artificial reefs placed in B.C.’s productive waters.

DougBencze.jpg (6767 bytes) Doug Bencze became Treasurer of the ARSBC in September of 2004.  Doug became a professional accountant in 1985, and began diving in 1987, now combining these two efforts for the Artificial Reef Society of B.C.  He was born, raised, and still lives, in Vancouver, the home base of the ARSBC.

Rick Wall Rick recently accepted a Volunteer Directorship with the Artificial Reef Society of BC (ARSBC) as Navy Liaison for the ANNAPOLIS Project. Although not a diver, he is a retired Naval officer with 36 years experience as a Marine Systems Engineer. He has had seagoing appointments on HMC Ships SASKATCHEWAN, MACKENZIE, ANNAPOLIS & IROQUOIS as well as shore appointments in Halifax, Ottawa, Esquimalt and Bath, England.

Tex.jpg (12530 bytes) Tex is one of the founders of the ARSBC. For many years his role has been government relations, ship acquisition and project financing, and developing the tourism enhancement aspects of ARSBC activities. He is a former Deputy Minister in Victoria, a one time Ministerial Assistant in Ottawa, and was President of the Mining Association of BC in the 1980s, as well as CEO in several companies. Tex is a lawyer by training but operates his own public affairs/government relations firm.

Jamie Slogan

Tex.jpg (12530 bytes) Jamie Slogan has worked as a marine and terrestrial ecologist for nine years in Canada, Mexico, and Seychelles including five years with EBA Engineering Consultants Ltd. in Vancouver, BC. His education includes Bachelor degrees in Environmental Engineering and Ecology, and a Master’s degree in Quantitative Community Ecology. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy in Marine Ecology specializing in colonization and succession on man-made fish compensation habitat in Burrard Inlet, BC. Mr. Slogan’s experience includes marine biodiversity inventories, ecosystem mapping, impact assessments, water quality monitoring, invasive species surveys, rare species surveys, restoration projects, environmental screenings, environmental monitoring, and contaminated site studies. Other experience includes marine baseline studies in the Arctic and impact assessments and regulatory permitting for various marine development projects in the Strait of Georgia, Canada.
